Remarks:
Extinct subfamily of ants known only from Burmese amber. The genus †Ceratomyrmex, also called “hell ant,” is characterized by upward-curving mandibles and a horn-like projection from the head, forming a deadly trap to pin prey. These ants were active predators and represent one of the most extraordinary evolutionary experiments among Cretaceous ants.
