Amber Inclusions from Myanmar – Windows into an Ancient World
For nearly 100 million years, Kachin amber has preserved extraordinary traces of a vanished ecosystem.

Inclusion(s):
†Haidomyrmecinae †Haidomyrmex – Hell Ant (Höllenameise)
-
Collection Number:
KA126/CAB
-
Inclusion Size:
Body length 5 mm
-
Amber Size:
30 x 12 x 3 mm
-
Age:
Around 100 million years (Cretaceous period)
-
Location:
Myanmar
Remarks:
†Haidomyrmex belongs to the extinct “hell ants”, an unusual group of ants known only from the Cretaceous. Unlike modern ants, their enormous scythe-like mandibles moved vertically and formed a highly specialized prey-capturing apparatus. With such formidable jaws, the name “hell ant” seems particularly fitting.
